Affluence and STEM: Widening Gender Gaps

A recent study has unveiled a compelling correlation: as nations experience an increase in wealth, the divide between genders in the attainment of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) degrees tends to expand. This research challenges prevailing theories, such as the Gender-Equality Paradox, which previously suggested that more gender-equal societies inherently exhibit larger STEM disparities. The current findings indicate that societal affluence, rather than gender equality in isolation, is a more dominant factor in shaping educational choices, particularly influencing men's increased participation in STEM fields as economic conditions improve.

This comprehensive longitudinal analysis, encompassing data from 113 countries over a 25-year span, meticulously tracked how shifts in economic prosperity within a nation correlate with changes in STEM graduation patterns. Economic Prosperity Fuels STEM Gender Divide

The latest academic inquiry indicates a clear connection between a nation's increasing economic prosperity and a widening gender gap in STEM higher education. As countries accumulate greater wealth, the probability of men graduating with STEM degrees, compared to women, sees a noticeable increase. This trend is not confined to specific economic stages but is observable across both developing and developed economies, suggesting a universal underlying mechanism. The research scrutinizes this phenomenon not through a static comparison of different countries at a single moment, but by observing changes within the same countries over an extended period, thus capturing dynamic shifts in educational outcomes as economic conditions evolve.

This extensive analysis drew upon UNESCO's educational records, spanning from 1999 to 2023, and covered a broad spectrum of 113 nations. The methodology involved calculating the likelihood of individuals completing STEM programs versus non-STEM programs, with STEM encompassing engineering, ICT, and natural sciences, while non-STEM included areas like business, humanities, and social sciences. To accurately determine the impact of economic changes, the study meticulously controlled for various stable national characteristics and historical trends. The findings consistently demonstrated that as a country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita rose, the gender disparity in STEM graduations amplified, predominantly due to an increase in male engagement rather than a significant decline in female participation, with engineering and ICT showing the most pronounced effects.

Challenging Paradigms and Future Implications

The findings of this study significantly reframe the existing understanding of gender disparities in STEM education, directly questioning the completeness of the Gender-Equality Paradox. Instead of merely associating gender equality with these gaps, the research highlights societal affluence as a primary driver. This new perspective suggests that economic development creates environments where certain career paths, particularly in technology and engineering, become more appealing to men, leading to their increased enrollment and graduation rates in these fields. Compulsory Voting Does Not Enhance Civic Engagement, Study Reveals

A recent study published in Public Opinion Quarterly offers compelling evidence that compelling citizens to vote does not automatically foster heightened political interest or bolster support for democratic principles. The research indicates that eliminating penalties for non-participation drastically reduces electoral turnout but leaves the population's political engagement and democratic viewpoints largely unaltered.

Mandatory voting systems, adopted by approximately 25 nations, legally obligate eligible citizens to participate in elections, often imposing fines or other sanctions for non-compliance. Advocates for mandatory voting frequently assert that it motivates individuals to familiarize themselves with political matters and cultivates a sense of civic responsibility. This topic has gained increasing relevance amid shifting global electoral patterns. "This discussion arises partly from declining voter turnout rates, thus addressing a tangible global issue," remarked Dieter Stiers, a postdoctoral researcher for the Research Foundation Flanders at KU Leuven. The underlying assumption is that if everyone is required to vote, political parties might broaden their outreach efforts to inform a wider demographic.

Mandatory Participation: Impact on Engagement and Attitudes

The primary impetus for this study was to empirically test a recurring argument in the debate surrounding compulsory voting, an argument that has historically been challenging to assess: whether mandating participation genuinely increases political engagement and interest. Stiers elaborated that under voluntary systems, individuals can simply opt to disregard politics. Conversely, with obligatory turnout, a certain level of effort becomes unavoidable. The hypothesis suggests that since people are required to vote regardless, they would be more inclined to invest some effort in understanding parties and candidates. However, the study’s findings challenge this widely held belief by revealing that the direct imposition of voting does not translate into deeper civic commitment or enhanced democratic values among the populace, suggesting that intrinsic motivation plays a more significant role than legislative compulsion.

Critics, conversely, contend that such systems might cultivate resentment among those forced to vote against their will. They also caution that mandatory voting could lead unengaged citizens to cast random ballots, potentially diminishing the overall political literacy of the voting public. Prior research on this subject has yielded highly inconsistent results. Stiers and co-author Shane P. Singh, a professor at the University of Georgia, highlighted that previous studies often grappled with methodological limitations. Cross-national surveys comparing various countries could be influenced by cultural or economic disparities unrelated to electoral laws. Laboratory experiments, while controlled, might not accurately mirror real-world behaviors. Stiers emphasized the inherent difficulty in testing this hypothesis and the substantial challenges faced by earlier research designs. This study, therefore, sought to overcome these hurdles by leveraging a unique policy shift in Belgium to provide a more robust empirical evaluation.

Belgium's Policy Shift: A Natural Experiment

To overcome these methodological challenges, the researchers capitalized on a rare policy alteration in Belgium. Compulsory voting has been enshrined in Belgian law since 1893. However, in 2021, the regional government of Flanders decided to abolish this requirement for local elections commencing in 2024. The remaining regions of the country, Wallonia and Brussels, maintained the mandatory voting regulations. This regional divergence created a unique, real-world experimental setting to examine how changes in electoral laws influence the electorate. “We identified a unique opportunity to test this argument in a real-world context,” Stiers stated, underscoring the study's aim to contribute to the compulsory voting debate with robust empirical evidence. The distinct policy change in Belgium provided an unparalleled chance to observe direct impacts on political behavior and attitudes in a controlled, yet authentic, environment.

The researchers meticulously tracked the attitudes of Belgian citizens throughout the 2024 election cycle, utilizing the Belgian Repeated Elections Panel, a dataset derived from a survey company. The survey was distributed in four distinct waves to capture shifts in public opinion over time. The initial wave encompassed 6,067 respondents, followed by 4,515 in the second, 3,343 in the third, and 2,744 individuals in the final wave. The sample was carefully matched to population quotas for age, gender, education, and region to ensure its representativeness of the broader Belgian public. The timing of these survey waves was deliberately chosen to isolate the effects of the voting law change. The first two waves occurred before and after national and European elections in June 2024, during which voting remained mandatory for all Belgian citizens. The third and fourth waves took place before and after the local elections in October 2024, when voting became voluntary for Flanders residents but remained compulsory elsewhere. This comprehensive approach, combined with difference-in-differences modeling, allowed for a rigorous analysis of how the policy change impacted voter turnout and political engagement, ultimately showing that while turnout plummeted in Flanders, democratic attitudes and political interest remained largely unchanged across both regions.

Narcissism and Problematic Generative AI Use: The Role of Individualism and Uncertainty Intolerance

A recent academic investigation has shed light on a concerning correlation: individuals exhibiting elevated levels of narcissism are more susceptible to developing problematic habits when interacting with generative artificial intelligence. This susceptibility is not uniform, with cultural orientations such as vertical individualism and personal intolerance of uncertainty playing crucial mediating roles. The study, detailed in BMC Psychology, provides a deeper understanding of the psychological mechanisms underpinning excessive and potentially harmful engagement with advanced AI systems.

Problematic use of generative AI describes an engagement pattern characterized by overuse, diminished control, and detrimental impacts on an individual's daily existence. This could manifest as dedicating excessive time to AI interactions, persistently using these tools despite adverse outcomes, or feeling incapable of moderating their usage. Such over-reliance on generative AI might extend to professional duties, educational pursuits, decision-making processes, creative endeavors, social interactions, or emotional support. These patterns can disrupt academic achievements, professional responsibilities, personal relationships, sleep quality, and other vital life aspects. Some individuals may increasingly depend on AI to evade challenging tasks, ambiguities, monotony, solitude, or distressing emotions. This problematic behavior might also include compulsive checks, repetitive prompts, or continuous engagement, mirroring other forms of unhealthy digital technology usage.

An additional concern is the potential for cognitive overreliance, where users increasingly transfer their cognitive functions, such as thinking, writing, problem-solving, or judgment, to AI systems. This can lead to a reduced willingness to undertake these activities independently. It is important to distinguish problematic use from frequent use; intensive AI engagement can be beneficial and productive as long as it remains controlled and does not cause impairment. Although the concept is still evolving, problematic AI use generally refers to engagement marked by impaired control, functional detriment, psychological dependence, or continued use despite significant negative repercussions.

Kağan Kırcaburun, an assistant professor at Düzce University in Turkey, initiated this research to examine the connection between malevolent personality traits and problematic generative AI use. His particular interest lay in exploring how individualistic cultural perspectives and intolerance of uncertainty might influence this relationship. Kırcaburun highlighted that while previous research had established links between problematic technology use and adverse personality traits, only a limited number of recent studies had specifically investigated this connection within the context of generative AI.

The study involved an online survey conducted through Prolific, engaging 677 participants who confirmed active use of generative AI. The average age of the participants was approximately 40 years, with an equal gender distribution. The survey included assessments designed to measure problematic generative AI use (using the Problematic GAI Use Scale, adapted from a scale for conversational AI), intolerance of uncertainty (the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale), individualistic orientation (the Individualism and Collectivism Scale), and various negative personality traits (the Dark Triad Dirty Dozen Scale and the Short Sadistic Impulses Scale).

Adverse personality traits are character flaws linked to self-interest, manipulation, emotional detachment, and disregard for others. These traits include Machiavellianism (strategic manipulation and exploitation), narcissism (grandiosity, entitlement, and need for admiration), psychopathy (callousness, low empathy, and impulsivity), and sadism (deriving pleasure from others' humiliation or pain).

The research outcomes revealed that participants exhibiting more pronounced problematic use of generative AI also tended to score higher on narcissism, and marginally higher on Machiavellianism and sadism. Furthermore, a greater degree of problematic generative AI use correlated with increased intolerance for uncertainty and a higher level of vertical individualism. Intolerance of uncertainty refers to a predisposition to find ambiguous or unpredictable situations distressing and to react negatively to a lack of clear outcomes. Vertical individualism, on the other hand, is a cultural viewpoint that highly values personal autonomy and competition while accepting disparities in status, achievements, and power.

Further analysis showed that for women, vertical individualism completely mediated the relationship between problematic generative AI use and narcissism. For men, this relationship was partially mediated by both vertical individualism and intolerance of uncertainty. The research team hypothesized that narcissism leads to a more pronounced vertical individualism, which, in turn, increases an individual's propensity for problematic generative AI use. “These findings collectively underscore the significant role of individualistic value systems and processes related to uncertainty in elucidating how detrimental personality characteristics contribute to problematic AI usage,” the study's author concluded.

This research significantly enhances the scientific understanding of problematic generative AI use. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that the study's design precludes drawing definitive causal conclusions from its findings. Additionally, all data relied on self-reports, introducing the potential for reporting biases to influence the results. Lastly, given the relatively low average levels of problematic AI use observed in this sample, the findings might primarily reflect variations in general engagement rather than clinically significant instances of problematic behavior.
