"Baby,why aren't you replying?You can't even spare$2,000 fro me?"Nathan's messages kept coming.He must really be penniless.
"Nathan, what's the deal with buying a house now?Trying to lock all your assets as premarital property?"I was blunt, typing out exactly what I thought.
That set him off."Premarital property?Emma Thompson, how heartless can you be?My whole family pooled their money for this down payment to as a surprise for you,yet you have the nerve to accuse me for it?That's just cold!"Nathan played the victim.

Nathan's family wasn't well-off.His parents were retired and in poor health. He had an older sister,Sarah, who married locally. They probably borrowed from her for the house.I hadn't even joined the Brooks family, and I was already in debt. And I have you to thank for,Nathan.
"We're getting our license tomorrow, and you didn't even discuss something as big as buying a house with me.Now you're saying I'm hurting you? You're the one playing dirty!"I was fuming.
"Discuss it with you? With your lazy, spendthrift way of living, would you have agreed to buy a house?Emma, life isn't just about fun—it's about responsibility!"Nathan's words pushed me over the edge.I blocked all this contacts. This wedding was off.
My parents own a business, and we're comfortably middle-class,so I was never short of pocket money.
Maybe my spending habits weren't perfect, but Nathan had no right to judge me.I never spent a dime of his money.
When I bought him luxury gifts or gaming gear,he never complained about my “spending habits”.He was just a selfish jerk.

That evening, when I got home,my parents were waiting in the living room."Emma, did you and Nathan have a fight?"Mom asked, concerned. Needless to say,Nathan had already tattled to her.
"Mom,Nathan secretly bought a house.Something that big,and he didn't even tell me.What does he take me for?"I huffed, explaining to Mom.
"Emma, you're a grown woman now.You can't be so headstrong anymore.Nathan buying a house is a good thing. As for whether that house is owned by the two of you or him alone, our family doesn't care about that,"Dad chimed in,trying to ease the tension in the room.
"Yeah, you're getting the license tomorrow. But with the fuss you’re making now..."Mom trailed off, looking troubled.

"Mom,I think we're not ready to get yet.Let's postpone the weddingfor now,"I said, rushing to my room.I couldn't bear to tell them directly I was done with Nathan. My parents absolutely adored him,and they had been nagging me about settling down and getting marries. If I told them now, they would never let me hear the end of it.
The next morning,as I arrived at work,Nathan was there with a bouquet of flowers in his hands."Emma, forgive me.I was impulsive!Buying a house is a big deal, and I shouldn't have decided alone.I'm sorry!"He rushed toward me.
"Oh now you realize it?Where was your senses when you bought the house? And Nathan,do you really think that little of me?"I snapped.
"Emma,we didn’t know what we were saying yesterday.Angry words don't count.Look,I'm here to apologize.I’ll make sure to add your name on the deed, okay?"
He handed me the flowers."This is soup my mom made, she got up at 5 a.m today just for you..She said it's great for women.Drink it while it's hot!"
He gave me a thermos.
"Oh,and my parents want to have dinner with your folks tomorrow to apologize for the house thing.Tell your parents, okay?"
Nathan said,walking off.
Before I could react,he was already far away.Looking at the flowers and thermos in hand,my heart softened.Honestly, part the reason of why I dated Nathan was his mom.
My mom's a career woman,always busy,barely eating,let alone cooking.
Nathan's mom was different though. After learning I had a sensitive stomach, she asked Nathan to bring me breakfast every day, and everyday the dishes would be different.
I had been to Nathan's house many times. His mom was warm and kind, his dad was an honest folk.I loved the vibe at Nathan's place.
His mom treated me better even than her own daughter. But later,I learned all that"kindness"came with a price.
